MAIN FEATURES

High-performance Geotechnical & Geochemical Database

HoleBASE III employs a powerful relational database engine to control and organise the many data tables specified in AGS Data Interchange Format version 3. This comprehensive set of tables includes sample, geology, and core data, in situ testing, and downhole instrumentation. Tables and functions for laboratory test results, including gas & chemical concentrations, and dynamic/static penetrometer data are offered in optional modules. In the unlikely event that the table you need doesn’t exist then simply build your own - user-defined tables and fields can be added and modified with ease. Each project can accommodate thousands of exploratory hole records with minimal effect on performance.

 

Stand-alone or Fully Networking
So that different corporate IT strategies can be accommodated the HoleBASE III software may be installed on a network server, or at the local machine. Even when executed from the local drive users can still opt to have the system and project data on a file server, enabling central control of resources such as borehole log layouts and user-defined structures and allowing access to project data from any workstation. Networking also enables central backing up of all resources and project data, and the optional Network Licence Manager grants access from any station without needing to move dongles around.

 

 

Secure & Robust Data Store
HoleBASE III offers greater control and accountability by tracking all data transactions - what was changed? When? And by whom? Entry into HoleBASE III is password controlled and user profiles can be assigned granting access at System Manager, Editing and Read-only levels. Additional rights are needed for Form Design and Report Editing. 

All data transactions are buffered so that data being edited is only written to the database on completion in a single momentary burst, reducing to a minimum any risk of data loss due to system failure.

Intuitive Digital Interface
Dock-able Toolbars allow easy access and drilling down through the data hierarchy with any number of diverse forms being displayed simultaneously for comparison and analysis. Highly responsive forms update automatically when the current hole record changes and summary grids enable rapid scrolling of child tables. Field-tips (displayed when mouse cursor rests above a field) inform user of full name, AGS header, and what Units (if any) are used. You can add items to drop-down menus on the fly and a spellchecker with complete scientific vocabulary is instantly available for all text fields.
 

Borehole/Trialpit Logs & Data Charts

One of the principal aims of HoleBASE is to produce high-quality borehole logs, quickly and efficiently using any Windows compatible printer. You can print some or all of your borehole logs at once, or preview them on screen with dynamic pan and zoom tools for close and detailed inspections. 

HoleBASE extends the boundaries of what is possible by offering a wide range of graphics options, enabling the user to decide how data is presented. Borehole and trialpit logs are just one type of Form Layout - other types include graphs, data charts and header sheets. 

The system comes with a number of form layouts to BS5930 standards and the optional Visual Form Designer (VFORMS3) allows users to modify these or define new ones from scratch.
 

AGS Data Import/Export

HoleBASE III provides full support for AGS Data Interchange Format Versions 2 & 3, including automatic conversion of CHEM & GAST in AGS2 to CNMT in AGS3 and assignment of new chemical determinands and non-standard units. External document files are handled efficiently and transmitted pick-list items are automatically appended to drop-down menus. Newly specified tables and fields are processed smoothly and incorporated seamlessly into the project database. All minor incidents are reported and data anomalies are displayed to the user to accept or decline with a complete record of events and decisions written to the Journal.
Support for External Document Files, Digital Drawings and Photographs
External files can be stored with many tables at all levels of data hierarchy. All PC document formats & file types are supported with the dynamic viewing of documents and pictures. HoleBASE facilitates automatic indexing and storage of external files with automatic attachment of files to exported AGS3 data.
Use this feature to attach photographs, CAD drawings and textual information not normally suitable for storage within the database. You can also attach drawing to forms dynamically when the form is produced - this is especially useful for showing detailed graphics on trialpit logs.
Tools for customizing at Local, Project, and System levels
HoleBASE’s Master Geology Code Library allows managers to achieve organisation-wide consistency in the codes used and legend options available for each. New legend codes, and their hatch patterns, can be created at System or Project level. Abbreviations for dropdown menus are assigned at project level if imported from AGS data and at system level if created by System Manager or on the fly by users. New chemical determinands are always assigned at System level. The Grading Analysis Library enables different criteria sets to be used to determine soil classification and nomenclature while the Sieve Set Library allows rapid data entry of GRAD data by choosing a pre-defined set of sieve sizes.
 

Toolkit for Database Management, Manipulation and Repair

Although intrinsically very stable and robust, HoleBASE III nonetheless provides a wide range of tools to fix data problems that may occur as a result of poorly formatted AGS files, incomplete or erroneously keyed data, computer mishaps or user errors. From orphan checking to complete database rebuild HoleBASE has the tool to get you out of a fix. For one-off global data operations - for example to assign geology codes based on contents of descriptions - the System Manager’s Command Console provides an easy-to-use search and replace feature that can also be used to delete whole batches of records, either completely or based on your own criteria or carry out rectification of repeated errors in existing data tables.

 

Designer for Borehole/Trialpit Logs & Data Charts (VFORMS3)
Visual Form Designer provides a versatile CAD-like environment to design Borehole/Trialpit Log Layouts, Depth-related Graphics and Specialised Data Charts. VFORMS can run simultaneously with HoleBASE enabling designs to be instantly previewed with real data.

The easy-to-use Import/Export feature allows exchange of form layouts with users on different networks or disconnected machines, and the Copy Form command enables rapid creation of slightly different versions of similar layouts. 

Access to VFORMS is restricted so that managers can implement version control of forms and assure compliance with corporate standards. 
 

Multi-user Data Entry with Customized Logging Sheets (KeyAGS)

KeyAGS provides a low cost data entry system with minimum learning curve and unlimited numbers of simultaneous users.
Co-ordinated data acquisition is achieved by first setting up logging sheets in MS Excel to your own required layout, printing blank sheets onto paper for engineers to fill out on site, and finally, copy-typing completed sheets onto identical forms on screen.
Your KeyAGS site licence enables any number of workstations to be harnessed to the data entry task and data can be posted to HoleBASE simultaneously from each.  
All transactions are recorded and original postings are saved for later inspection if needed. 
 

Your site licence covers temporary use at site offices so you can create postings on site and later transfer them to HoleBASE. If you’ve got pressing time targets and want real-time data capture you can even email them to the office at the end of each day’s drilling.

Queries & Reports
(QM-RD Module & HB Wizard for MS Excel)
To enable you to control where and how you create your reports HoleBASE provides both internal and external reporting facilities. 
The internal option – using the QM-RD Module - allows easily built queries and rapid tabular reports within the HoleBASE framework.
The external option - using HB Wizard - gives the greater freedom within the MS Excel environment to create sophisticated data charts and use templates for remote, multi-user report automation. 

A large number of HB Wizard templates are shipped with HoleBASE – you can customise ours or create your own from scratch. The familiar Excel environment reduces learning curves and existing Excel layouts are easily converted to HB Wizard templates so you can make use of your past report layouts as well.

 
Geographical Mapping (SPG Module)
One of the great innovations in HoleBASE III, ActiveMapper utilizes the application’s screen background as a site plan where geo-referenced hole locations are plotted automatically and digital maps can be added to the backdrop.Use ActiveMapper to interrogate and manipulate your data visually and intuitively - you can even enter new borehole locations simply by pointing and clicking on the map. Drawing tools are provided for adding shapes, circles and text and you can zoom and pan for close examination of particular areas.
  
 
Quick Section Diagrams (SPG Module)
Define a section simply by dragging a line between the boreholes you want to include. Your section is drawn immediately in a separate graphics window, to scale and printer-ready. Water strike data and a key to the legend hatch patterns are drawn automatically with a range of user options to change the layout and appearance.
 
3D Modelling Source Data (DML Module)
(Included with KeyHOLE)
A variety of generic XYZ data files can be produced from HoleBASE, enabling 3D presentation and analysis of your data using KeyHOLE or third party digital modelling software.
Sophisticated interpolated processes can also be employed to predict isolated geological strata and lens boundaries if KeyHOLE is used.
Various options are provided for the modelling of groundwater, chemical and gas concentrations. The latter can also be analysed in relation to specific trigger criteria

For working in the AutoCAD environment KeyHOLE provides all the tools you need to produce digital models of your geology, contaminated ground, ground-water, and to produce a whole range of high quality drawings directly from your HoleBASE data.
